Thesis
The controversial Supreme Court case Korematsu v. United States (US) ruled that the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II (WWII) was constitutional. The majority of Japanese Americans stood silent to the injustice of internment at the time and did not fulfill their responsibility to fight for their rights. Fred Korematsu, like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, is a national civil rights icon who defended his right to live freely when the US government, the Supreme Court, and the general public took national security as the top priority and sacrificed an individual’s constitutional rights.
"My father refused to go to the prison camps. He stood up for what he believed in: that no American citizen should have to give up his or her civil rights. For that decision, he was arrested and convicted, but he kept fighting. He appealed his case all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled against him. " -Karen Korematsu, daughter of Fred Korematsu
